State and local governments all over the United States are passing laws banning the installation of gas stoves in new residences.
The move by state and local governments – mostly in New York and California – comes half a year after federal officials in the Consumer Product Safety Commission began floating the idea of banning the stoves in the near future due to claims that the gas stoves can cause indoor air pollution and contribute to so-called climate change.
In May, the Democrat-controlled State Legislature of New York banned the installation of gas stoves and furnaces from most buildings in the state.
The provision, included in the state’s most recent budget bill passed in early May, prohibits the installation of fossil-fuel equipment in buildings seven stories or less beginning in 2026. The ban will then gradually include larger buildings beginning in 2029. (Related: Another ploy to control people’s lives: Biden administration plans to ban gas stoves.)
“Changing the ways we make and use energy to decrease our reliance on fossil fuels will help ensure a healthier environment for us and our children,” claimed New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie in a statement following the passage of the legislation.
In a follow-up statement, Gov. Kathy Hohul made it clear that current buildings and residences are exempt from this ban, along with any new and existing hospitals, restaurants and buildings not fully supported by the state’s electrical grid.
“I want to be very clear. I know people love to misinterpret this, but people with existing gas stoves, you’re welcome to keep them,” she said. “This is where our nation has to go eventually – But I want to make sure that it’s not a bumpy road to the transition.”
In California, the city of Berkeley in the San Francisco Bay Area attempted to pass a similar ban way back in 2019, becoming the first city in the U.S. to adopt such a proposal. But this proposal was struck down by the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco following a lawsuit by the California Restaurant Association, claiming the city ordinance violates federal law.
The federal administration of Joe Biden itself is proposing similarly restrictive rules that will end up seeing gas stoves banned from most residences. Not only that, but the administration has also proposed new so-called “energy efficiency rules” that would see other home appliances like dishwashers be forced to use less water and electricity in the name of mitigating so-called climate change.
Similar rules are already in place, targeting appliances like conventional and microwave ovens, shower heads, refrigerators and laundry machines.
The Biden administration claims the new rules regarding energy efficiency will save American consumers billions of dollars on utility bills. Manufacturers claim the savings will be eaten up by the higher prices of the new, more complicated appliances they will be forced to make, thanks to the new regulations.
As the federal government continues to push for regulating gas stoves and other appliances into non-existence, more and more local and state politicians are passing similar gas stove bans.
Berkeley City Councilmember Kate Harrison, who authored the city’s original 2019 ordinance to ban gas stoves, noted that a ban on natural gas or other efforts to curtail the use of natural gas has already spread to at least 70 other communities in California alone, with similar initiatives already working their way through the local governments of Seattle and New York City.
“This is a movement that can’t be stopped,” claimed Harrison, responding to the Circuit Court of Appeals’ reversal of the city’s ban. “They’ve conflated a 1970s regulation about the efficiency of appliances with what kind of materials can come into our house. We did not change appliances, we changed the source of fuel that can come into new buildings.”
Harrison even noted that the ruling that overturned Berkeley’s ban is limited in that it does not affect the many other city and county governments in her state that have passed similar regulations banning or curtailing the use of natural gas through amending building codes that meet certain federal requirements. Other municipal policies regulating gas distribution and air emissions are not impacted either.
However, gas stove bans from two dozen cities with ordinances constructed similarly to Berkeley’s may be affected, including San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oakland.
